What Is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI is a class of artificial intelligence in which autonomous agents perceive their environment, reason about goals, plan multi-step actions, use external tools, and execute decisions with minimal human intervention. Unlike a single language model that responds to one prompt at a time, Agentic AI is a system of orchestrated, goal-directed agents that operate continuously across workflows.

Agentic AI is the architectural step beyond traditional Agent AI. While Agent AI describes individual autonomous components, Agentic AI describes the discipline of designing, deploying, and governing fleets of these agents safely at enterprise and governmental scale. Core Components of an Agentic AI System

Every production-grade Agentic AI deployment contains the same five primitives:

1. Agents — autonomous reasoning units, typically built on large language models with explicit goal definitions and operational constraints.
2. Tools — APIs, databases, code execution environments, browsers, and enterprise systems agents can invoke.
3. Memory — persistent context stores allowing agents to maintain state across interactions.
4. Evaluators — secondary models or rule systems that score agent outputs and detect drift.

Agentic AI vs. Generative AI

Generative AI produces content in response to prompts. Agentic AI uses generative models as components inside autonomous decision loops that take action in the real world. Generative AI writes the email; Agentic AI reads the inbox, decides which emails matter, drafts replies, schedules meetings, and updates the CRM.

Why Agentic AI Is the Defining AI Architecture of This Decade

The economic value of single-prompt AI is bounded by human attention. The economic value of Agentic AI is bounded only by the cost of compute. The strategic question is no longer model selection — it is operating-model design.

How to Start an Agentic AI Program — A 90-Day Plan

Days 1–30: Define. Write a one-page Agentic AI doctrine. Identify three high-value use cases. Secure executive sponsorship and budget. Stand up a small internal squad of 4–6 people.

Days 31–60: Deploy. Build one production agent. Wire it to real tools, real data, and real users. Instrument it from day one.
